TOPIK Speaking Test: What It Is and How It Works (2026 Guide)

Everything You Need to Know (Format, Scoring, Examples & Tips)

📌 What is the TOPIK Speaking Test?

The TOPIK Speaking Test is a new component of the Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK), designed to evaluate your real-life Korean speaking ability, not just reading, listening, or writing.

Unlike traditional TOPIK exams, this test focuses on:

  • Your ability to express ideas clearly

  • Your fluency and pronunciation

  • How naturally you can communicate in Korean

The test is officially managed by the TOPIK Official Website, and its format and availability are gradually expanding.

The Question is:

Do you NEED to take the TOPIK Speaking Test?

You should consider taking it if you:

  • Are living or planning to live in Korea

  • Want to improve your real communication skills

  • Need proof of speaking ability for: Jobs or University programs

  • Already took TOPIK II but feel your speaking is weak (in my experience, majority of the test takers have already obtain at least TOPIK Level 3.)

In short: if you can understand Korean but struggle to speak, this test is for you.

Currently, the test is only available in South Korea, but is scheduled to expand to selected international locations.

⚠️ Since availability changes, always check updates on theTOPIK Official Website before planning.

When you think of a speaking test, this is what students normally imagine it to be.

Is the Test Face-to-Face?

No.

Though you have to go to the specific exam center, however, The TOPIK Speaking Test is not an face-to-face interview.

Unlike the IELTS Speaking Test, where you speak directly with an examiner, this test is fully computer-based.

Fully Computer-Based

  • You listen to questions through the headset

  • You record your answers using the microphone

  • Your responses are evaluated later

You are seated in this kind of computer room, headsets🎧 with microphone🎤 will be provided.

What does this means?

The good thing is,

  1. No pressure from a real person

  2. Standardized testing environment (no unfairness)

  3. More predictable structure

However, there's always pros and cons right?

The cons are,

  1. No interaction or follow-up questions

  2. Can feel unnatural at first

  3. You must manage your timing carefully

The most important question is, what do they ask?

Okay, let's calm down alright? I got you!

How the TOPIK Speaking Test Works

The test consists of a series of speaking tasks.

According to the TOPIK Official Website, you are evaluated on your ability to understand prompts and respond appropriately in spoken Korean.

Common Task Types

While questions vary, you will typically be asked to:

1. Provide Personal Information

📌 Example: 자기소개를 해 주세요.

2. Describe Experiences or Topics

📌 Example: 최근에 했던 취미 활동에 대해 설명해 주세요.

3. Express Opinions

📌 Example: 온라인 수업에 대해 어떻게 생각합니까?

4. Respond to Situations

📌 Example: 친구가 약속에 늦었을 때 어떻게 말하겠습니까?

How is the Test Scored?

Your speaking is evaluated based on criteria such as:

✔️ Fluency

✔️ Accuracy

✔️ Vocabulary

✔️ Task Completion

These criteria are based on guidelines from the TOPIK Official Website.

✔️ Time Management (personal opinion)
